When we are watching a demonstration of GS1-3 packaging, so the system itself, that will be in a video on a very down-to-earth, a practical one-on-one, how to get started to work with that. And something that is quite specific and very important when you are working with your packaging data, especially here in Denmark, is the eco-modulation. So this is the environmental classification that we are addressing a bit more after the demonstration and then sharing some best practices on how to manage your packaging data now and in the future. Perfect. But let's just set the scene on why I assume we are all gathered here today and what the extended produce responsibility actually is. The extended produce responsibility here in Denmark is from the EU Packaging Directive, which has been implemented for a lot of years in our fellow European neighbour countries. This has finally been implemented here in Denmark at the October 1st, 2025. What it means is companies who are bringing in packaging to the Danish market are now responsible for both the handling of the packaging and the affection on the environment that this specific packaging type actually does. This is set in the eco-modulation and it is in order to get some more healthier packaging within Denmark that this legislation has been set in. What it actually means for producers, for the companies who are affected by this legislation is that it sets a lot of requirements and demands for packaging data that companies might not be used to deliver before. And in order for any company who might be affected by this, we have built a system within GS1 Denmark to handle that specific packaging data so that you are both compliant with the legislation, but you also have this overview of what your packaging actually consists of and can use this in the future for future purposes to enhance your packaging, but also to be ready to handle upcoming legislation such as the PBWR. So this is what the ideas and the attention behind the system actually is. It is to help handle and manage packaging data and be compliant with the legislation as well. Just to address who the key stakeholders actually is in the extended producer responsibility, you can see four pillars here where the Ministry of the Environment here in Denmark are responsible for implementing EPR here in Denmark. Then it moves on and actually affects the producers. So this is the companies who are now responsible for all of the packaging that they are setting in at Danish Brown, both the handling of the packaging, so the physical flow, but also the digital flow in telling both of the authorities and the collective schemes. This is how much packaging I am bringing in on these products and this is how they are affecting the environment. The producer responsibility organizations, PROs or collective schemes, there's a lot of them. I'm going to refer to them either as a collective scheme or a PRO, but they are the ones who can help to manage all of the physical flow. So they are the ones who are making sure that everything in Denmark works in the handling of the packaging. They are also the ones who are bringing in the report for submission, so all of the information that you have on your packaging, they are bringing them further on to the authorities, DPA, which is a register on all packaging that has been brought into Denmark. And there then can be an overall view on how much packaging and how we are set here in Denmark. Where we as an organization, GS1 Denmark, can help is just between the producers and the PROs where producers can, or companies, can structure and handle your packaging data easily and efficiently in a system built on the legislation. And then you can send exactly the report that you need for the submission here from one system. So instead of working with Excel or having that structured in any other way, then you can do it local within a system and making sure that you are compliant with the legislation. GS1 Denmark is a neutral not-for-profit organization. We are actually a global organization. We have a GS1 organization in 116 countries where there is plus 2 million companies who is a member of a GS1 organization. We are a member organization so we are owned by our members and our standards and services exist solely with the purpose of helping our members and making sure that they create value for them as a member. We might be most known as the ones with the barcodes but we are actually also quite big within Master Data Exchange and this is where GS1-3 packaging comes in. We have this GDSN standard where we can structure and this standard and mythology is built within the system to have an easy way of structure your packaging data making sure that everyone is doing the exact same thing so when you are sending packaging data you are both agreeing on this is how we are communicating and when I am stating this sort of packaging then it means exactly the same for the ones who are receiving it so that is the idea and the intention behind the system to have an easy way to structure it and both be compliant with the legislation but also making sure that through a standardized way that packaging data is handled easily and especially when packaging data is flowing from both the packaging manufacturer to the recipient at the end who needs it packaging data needs to be exactly the same within that chain and this is what the system can do amongst other things before we are going more into trade packaging and how to view your products as packaging component I am just going to let you in on how this actually works already you can see there is a few steps from one to six and what we are focusing on here today is actually one to four we need to have everything in order before we can get some calculations and get some results so the first things that we need to be or need to do is to create packaging master data we need to make sure that we have our packaging components into packaging units that we have done the eco modulation and especially the environmental classification where we are grading our packaging due to the legislation when we have done that we have we are going to connect that into products so we are saying this packaging unit consisting of these components I have used that on ABC product and then when we are moving towards pillar six where we are saying I have then sold this amount of product ABC then it can take all of that packaging classification that we have done in the first steps and getting some final results if we have sold them into packaging systems and you need to declare on both the primary secondary and tertiary level then you can structure that within the packaging system stating this amount of primary packaging so this is when I have sold 10 products here in the primary in one box then the primary would state 10 times the packaging unit and then one box in the secondary stating there is a box and maybe also some wrapping around it and a logo the packaging systems tab is a way to structure how exactly packaging when your products are leaving your warehouse so how is your system whenever they are leaving your warehouse you can then structure that within the packaging system we are focusing on step one two four today because this is where the hard work actually is and then you can get the final results later on in step five and six just to state exactly how the extended produce responsibility actually is for me I'm a big fan of this illustration as I need the why I'm the person who needs to have the why behind my work and this is the why on how the extended produce responsibility actually is quite precisely what you see here is an illustration of packaging so companies with produce responsibility brings in packaging to the Danish market then it might be in a store and then it has been brought home to me as a consumer and me as a consumer would then be finished with the packaging and placing them into my bins packaging bins then when that has been done it used to be the municipalities who were then making sure that that has been collected but that is now the produce responsibilities organizations PROs who are making sure that all of the packaging that I'm leaving behind as a consumer and have sorted that that has been picked up and then they pick yeah that has been picked up and then it has been brought further on to some waste processes where that has been sorted based on my material categories and if there is any good thing in my packaging that can be brought back into a circulation such as the raw material market then that has been brought back into that circulation and then everything will flow this is actually what as a company who have produced responsibility in Denmark are now responsible for that that is making sure that this works of course not every company with their packaging produced responsibility can have a contract with a waste handler so that is why the produced responsibility organizations will handle that they can handle all of this physical flow but in order for them to do so then they need to know exactly what they can expect so they need to know how much amount of glass can I expect on this specific point in order for me to send someone to pick that up and those informations is something that with produced responsibility can then deliver to the produced responsibility organization so can state through GS1 trade packaging in this report for submission that in October in the month of October or in the month of November or the month that you are reporting on can expect the PRO this amount of packaging for me as a company and that is the work that are going to go through in just a few moments or this is an offer where can enter the system to structure your packaging data and then send that to your collective scheme making sure that everything runs smoothly within Denmark we are a not for profit organization and we have of course invited our members to become a part of this system and getting some inputs on what the system should do and can be done in order for that to create value for our members we exist solely for our members purposes so thank so much for all that has been mentioned here for the contributions and we will of course continue to do so and now we are moving towards the more practical part so we know the why we are working with our packaging data and why it can be a good idea to structure that within the system and now we are watching some illustrations on just before the video on how to get started so the first thing that we would advise to do is to have your product and then separate your product into components and this is the finished product the jam jar the jam jar the finished product consists of both a lid a label and glue together combined they are a packaging unit this packaging unit can then be associated to all of my different types of jam so if I am selling strawberry jam and raspberry jam and black currant jam or even orange jam then the product might differ but the packaging unit is exactly the same and I can then make an association to those packaging units and then I can start to see exactly how much packaging in this packaging unit are actually involved when I'm selling my type of product which is jam when if we are zooming in on the packaging unit and especially the packaging components then they have some different categories and they have some different functions the glass of the packaging or the jam jar is the main component this is what I as a consumer would then sort in glass at my household there is also a label the label is integrated at the main component what that means is that this label will actually follow the main component when I'm putting that into the glass container at my warehouse this would also mean that the eco modulation so the environmental classification that I'm supposed to do is only going to be at the main component it should not be done at the integrated component as the label will follow the jar for its purpose whenever it has been sorted and that could also actually be within the lid if that is documented if that is separated but yeah you should have that in order if you are in doubt of whether or not it is an integrated component we would highly recommend you to reach out to your packaging supplier on how this actually works but if have a product and are placing your jam jar both the lid the label and the glue within the exact same container then there are two components that actually become integrated components you need to structure your packaging data due to that and the system will let know on exactly how to do so but it is important that view your packaging within these specific components and into packaging units and this is a way to get started can also see the packaging components here in this example this could be medicine it could also be some vitamins the product within the packaging unit could be different would then create all of your products and then make an association to this exact packaging unit would create the packaging components so the box and the bottle and then the label and the lid and then connecting that into a packaging unit would do the environmental classification at the box and at the bottle and then state at the bottle that there might be two integrated components together when have done that and have made that association to your products then will start to see some numbers will start to see what is exactly the grading whether it is yellow red or green and some results on the volumes on how much have actually sold in that period of time tam sp i In GS1 Trade Packaging, products and their packaging is initially separated. This ensures flexibility. If the same packaging is used across multiple products, you can maintain this data in one single place. We'll start out by creating a product. I navigate to the Products tab, where we create and maintain our products. In this example, I will use Jam as my product. When creating a product, we need to provide the brand name, a description of the product, a product ID, and the net content. As a GS1 organization, we always recommend identifying the product using the GTIN, but this is optional. Now the Jam product is created. As you can see, there are no data fields related to the packaging on the product page. These data fields only relate to what's inside the packaging, the product itself. Let's navigate to the Packaging Master Data tab to add the packaging data. Our Jam product consists of packaging with three components. A lid, a label, and the jar itself. We'll start out by creating the lid. The component must be given a meaningful name, so that we are able to identify it later. You can choose to include the material type and weight in the name. We choose the element type, a material type, and enter in the weight. Next we create the jar for the Jam product. We also give it a meaningful name. We specify the element type, a jar, and the material type, glass. Then we enter in the weight of the jar. The third component, the product label, highlights another feature in GS1 trade packaging. In the system we can specify whether the component is made of a mono material or a composite material, meaning that it consists of multiple material layers. In this case we are dealing with a composite material and the different layers must be specified. Our label is made of paper with a plastic coating of LDPE. At the top we enter the weight of the entire label and then we specify for each layer. The label is also a so-called integrated component. Packaging can consist of both a main component, integrated components, and separated components. An integrated component is per definition a packaging component which isn't to be separated from the main component when recycling or during transport. It's important to connect the main components with the integrated components before creating packaging systems, but especially before doing the packaging classification for each component. According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's regulation, packaging consisting of a main component and integrated components must be environmentally graded as a whole. We navigate to the main component, the jam jar. I click Edit Details by the tab Integrated Components. I choose the integrated component from the list to the right and drag it over in the empty field. At Join Type, I choose from the drop-down list how the integrated component is connected to my main component. Then I click Save. The jam jar and the label are now linked together in the system. I then need to assemble my components, jar and lid, into a packaging unit. In the Packaging Master Data tab, I click Create New and Create New Unit. Once more, I give my unit a meaningful name, in this example a jam product. I also have to specify the unit type, in this case a jar. Then I can assemble the packaging unit. On the right side of the screen, there is an overview of the components that I have created and these can now be dragged into the unit. When components are dragged into the unit, the system automatically assigns a quantity of 1. If you are dealing with packaging, for example a multipack containing multiple components, the quantity can be adjusted accordingly. In our example, there is only one of each component in this packaging. I go back to the Packaging Master Data tab to get an overview of all the components and units created. Now we have packaging and products created in the system. Then we have the option to create an association between the two, which is not mandatory, but an option. If there is packaging in the platform which isn't necessarily linked to a product, it can still exist on its own without an association. I navigate to the Products tab. The first page I am presented with is Linked Packaging. I click on the Link Packaging Unit. The specific unit is searched for and selected. In this example, I have created three different Jam Jar products. Strawberry, Raspberry and Orange Jam. But only one packaging unit. This is because in this example, I use the same packaging for all three products and therefore it can be linked to all three. If the packaging is improved and we need to update the data, I only have to do it once and it will affect all linked products. I know that I always sell my Jam in bulk. The basic products and bulk packaging exist separately in the system, but it allows you to combine or create a relationship between the units. This is done under the Packaging Systems tab. Following this example, we create Jam Multiple Variants. And I have already created the components and units for this, and can be dragged into the system as primary, secondary or territory packaging. In my case, the packaging system always contains one bulk and 24 basic units, which is typed in. Businesses operate differently, as you probably know. Some companies know exactly how many pallets they put on the market. Others use the amount of sold basic products, and some measure at the bulk packaging level. By assembling packaging into packaging systems and specifying the number of units, you can accurately calculate the total amount of packaging introduced to the market across primary, secondary and territory packaging. GS1 trade packaging gives you the option to carry out packaging classification for all your packaging. This is done at the component level. Following the same example, the jar is our main component, as it is our heaviest component. The jar has the label as an integrated component, which means they are classified together. And the lid is a separate component, and is classified on its own. I begin with the jar. First, I specify an overall material category, in this case glass. Based on the selected material category, a list of design requirements will appear and need to be filled out. I click Edit. The form is based on design requirements by executive order on packaging and packaging waste, and must be indicated with the values Low, Medium or High. If you are unfamiliar with specific material details, contact your packaging supplier. I fill out all design requirements, and when I am done, I click Save. Each material subcategory classifies packaging into levels based on its environmental impact, and the component is assigned an overall level, Low, Medium or High. I repeat the process for the lid, and the environmental graduated contribution of the components of the Jam product is now calculated. Lastly, a few practical details about the platform. In the component preview, you can set elements as inactive or active. For example, if certain packaging is no longer used, but needs to be documented for historical purposes, which is a function that supports legal requirements, for the same reason all activity is locked in the system. Currently, users can see the user responsible for both creation and last modification. So that was how to get started practically working with the packaging data within GS1 treat packaging. That could sum up those slides and how to actually create that into something useful and start to work and getting most of the masses done. What you are doing by creating the packaging components and connecting them into packaging units and then making the associations to the product and creating the packaging systems. And most importantly, this doing the packaging classification at the component level. This is the foundation of everything. This is the foundation of both the report for submission, but also the things that if you are attending this webinar in order to share your packaging data with your retailer. This is the work that they are asking and what they are needing in order for them to do their own report for submission. So what you saw here was the foundation of all work with your packaging data. And what could be and what we have experienced is a bit more advanced and needs some more attention is this packaging classification at a component level. So we are just going to go through the steps on how to do so within this tab. And I am just going to make sure that this is full screen. This tab within the packaging classification at a component level. Let me just say, okay, now you can see my scroller. This packaging classification should only be done at a separate components and main components. This should not be done at an integrated component as you saw. And the integrated component should either and also not be a part of the packaging unit. Just to state that. So this is a packaging component at a, that is a main component or a separate component where we are seeing here that this needs to be filled out. Whenever you see this, then it is a way of stating you are missing to do something at the packaging classification. The first thing that you would need to do is to decide whether or not this is disposable packaging or reusable packaging. A reusable packaging that could be pallets or cages is something that is packaging, but has their own system of being reused. So where the pallets would not be picked up from, from, from, from the, from the waste handlers that has its own circular system that would be reused. So that could be pallets or cages and the disposable packaging. Then this example is then plastic. It could be glass. But this is the packaging where me as a consumer at my own household or at the, or at the, at a company level, that would be brought into a container stating, this is where you should put plastic. Then you are determining the waste category, whether or not it is recyclable waste is, is it residual waste or it is dangerous goods. So recyclable waste, that would be the, the other bins where they are being brought back into circulation. So some materials, recyclable waste, that would be the, the thing where it, it is going to be burned at, at the, at the waste holders that has to do some other things. So if you have anything where such as glass, glass is some material that can be brought back into circulation, then the waste category would be recyclable waste. You are saving that. Then you are moving towards the material category. This is especially for the eco modulation and for the, and for the legislation. Material category. Material category. Yeah. You are determining the material category, pressing save, and then you will be exposed on whether or not this is affected by the single use plastic product. That is another plastic directive. If, if that is the case, you can mark that. But when you are pressing save here at foam plastic, then the recyclability grading, the yellow ones that needs to be filled out, you will then be presented by that. And that is, that is determined whether or which material category you are choosing. So you're choosing the material category, and then you are filling out the recyclability grading. Then you are grading your product based on the announcement, the material, additive colors, print colors. And these are all what is required from the legislation. So when you have filled all of those information out, and you have pressed save, then you will get what you saw in the video or grading, whether it is low, medium or high in the red, yellow and green category. And I highly advise everyone to, to do that and do that specifically, as this would be the output for everyone and what is really the important thing. Okay. What we have experienced and are still experiencing is in order to do the e-comodulation to do the structuring of your packaging data. All of that, what you saw before the slides is that you need to know what you are, what your packaging consists of. So you need to know some material types and what actually is existing of your packaging, not just by looking at it, but having some, maybe a data sheet or something to determine exactly what the packaging consists of. And what we have experienced is that where the responsibility lies in the extended producer responsibility might not be where the knowledge is about the packaging. So this would be a classic example of how a company with producer responsibility in Denmark needs to go back in their value chain in order to collect this specific data. So either from a private neighbor producer or even a packaging manufacturer. And that packaging manufacturer could even be placed outside of the EU borders. And then you need to explain exactly why you are asking for this material or information as this is a legislation that is based in EU. So there is a communication task. We have provided and have created a letter for your suppliers. So you are free to download that at gs1.dk. and you can also ask them to fill out an Excel sheet that you download from the system. Send that to the packaging manufacturer or the package or private labor producer to get the necessary information. You can also, if they are a part of GS1 trick packaging, then get them to send you packaging information to you as a, yeah, in your own workspace within the system. So you can send packaging data to one another when you are a part of the system. And that would, of course, be much easier to everyone. But in order to do the eco modulation and to structure the data, there needs to be some data. And we highly advise you to get in touch with your packaging manufacturers and get those information just to get started. You can collect packaging data from either your supplier in GS1 trick packaging if they are a member. You can import packaging data from the Excel sheet. And you can do this manually. And, yeah, when you do it manually, then you can get a feeling of how the Excel template actually works where you get some visual help. But if you would like to just go straight into the Excel template, then that is to be found in the system under the dashboard. Pressing the import button. And then you press download template here at the top right. And then you will be exposed by two options. You can either download one or you can download multiple templates. And what you need to know is there is a unique idea within a, sorry, a unique idea within every Excel sheet. So when you have 10 suppliers, then you can download 10 different Excel sheets, making sure that when you are importing those informations that the Excel sheet knows things from one another. So you don't need to worry about how the system can know where this is coming from. The Excel sheet has an individual or a unique ID within each sheet. So just know if you are collecting data from 10 suppliers, then download 10 different templates. I'm just going to download one for the illustration here. And then this is how it looks like. You can create products. You can create packaging components. You can create packaging units. And you can make the associations to one another. You cannot create packaging systems and you cannot do the eco modulation in the system. This has to be done within the system live itself. But you can get the basic information in order to do so within the system. Okay. So if anyone is watching and need to share some packaging data to your retailer, these are the steps that you need to go through. So when you are sharing packaging data with your retailer, make sure that you have created your consumer units, your case unit. And if your palette has a GTIN, then the palette as a product. What you see here should be created as individual products. And yeah, don't create a product as a palette. If the palette do not have a GTIN in hand, then just create consumer unit and the case as a product. When you have created the product hierarchy, then link the consumer unit packaging to one another and then the case unit packaging to one another at those levels. And then the palette that if you have some palette wrap that you are responsible for, if you do not have a palette GTIN, then link that palette wrap to the case at the secondary level. And that would be a way to work around it. And then finally, create a packaging system to make sure that you have the chain of packaging to have both the primary level, the secondary level, and even the tertiary level. And this is how you are selling it to your retailer. So how this leaves your warehouse, that would be how you state the packaging system, as you saw in the video. But the important part is definitely to create each product with a GTIN at the product hierarchy and adding your retailer at the product and then sending that to them. So make sure that you have created all of the packaging products with the GTIN and attach your retailer and then press send. And you can do that when you have conducted all of the eco-modulation. And this is also a slide and a guide at GS1.dk if you would like to have that. It is at GS1.dk under guidance where you can see that checklist. Okay, perfect. So just to make sure that you see the care, that you are sure that there is a benefit of all the hard work, then I have an example of how the report for submission could look like. So what we have done within the past hour is how to create your packaging data, how to structure it. And when you are done by doing that, then you can get the report for submission. And then you can actually get the results that you would need in order to both improve your packaging, but also to have that in order to be compliant with the legislation. So the information would be structured like this. This is where you can see how the eco-modulation is of high importance. It is sorted by the material category. How much kilograms in household have you in cardboard with the recitable waste? And you can also see it in commercial and the total sum at the end. And you can see different material categories based on what you have conducted at both the material category and the recyclability grading. So you can see different types of packaging and the packaging classification at the component level. This is the results right here. And maybe, yeah, if we zoom in at the food and beverage cartons, an example of this could be to look into why is this red? Why is there so much kilograms in household in the rec category when that is actually a good, yeah, maybe a good main character? And then look into the packaging on what should be improved in order to get a better classification, either in a low or a medium. Yeah, so that could be an indication of that. You can use those to either go back in your organization or on your own to see these are some improvement points. But these exact points is also the ones that your PRO needs in order to pick up the packaging that you are responsible for. So they then know, okay, you are responsible for, okay, two million kilograms of cardboard. And then they need to pick that up somehow. So they need to plan something operationally in order to do that. So this is the result. And that would be the final thing that you can see when you have done all of the things before. These are just some best practices on how to manage your packaging data. We highly recommend just to be familiar with the announcement order. So that is the legislation for UPR in Denmark. Not that you should read it fully, but there is a guidance just to be familiar with what is expected from you. Reach out to your suppliers if you have any questions about especially the ecomodulation or just to collecting your packaging data. Have a contact. That would be a great help when you are going to work with this in the future as well. And if you need some advice on how to get started, we recommend you to start to do this at the packaging that you have the most of. So if I were a jam producer, then I would start to do this at my jam jar. And then all of the other products that I might do, I would do that afterwards. But do that to get started and make sure that you are conducting whatever you are responsible for. But this is just a way to get started. And then when you are started working with it, that would be way much easier to do the other things. And if you aren't sure about a packaging classification or a component, then contact your supplier and or slash your local PRO. They will help you on both the legal advice and getting the information that you need. But this is a price overview on what it actually costs of having this packaging system. We are a neutral not for profit organization. So there is a membership of the 650 Danish crowns. And then there is the subscription fee on the service, which is 1250. And if you're using the report function, then that is additional 5500. And then there is a product base fee. So depending on how many products that you have in your system, then you would be placed in these different categories. You can read all about our prices at GS1.dk.
